Uel

אוּאֵל/YOO-el/

Will of God (or possibly 'God is father' as a contraction of Abuel)

Summary

An Israelite of the family of Bani who divorced his foreign wife during Ezra's reforms after the Babylonian captivity.

Post-Exilic Reform

Uel was a descendant of Bani who, along with many other Israelites, had married a foreign wife during or after the Babylonian exile. When Ezra led reforms to address the problem of intermarriage with pagan peoples, Uel was among those who agreed to divorce his foreign wife in obedience to the covenant. The corresponding name in 1 Esdras 9:35 appears as 'Juel.'
