Tiglath Pileser(tilgath pilneser)

/TIG-lath-pih-LEE-zer/

Summary

Tiglath-pileser III was a powerful Assyrian king who invaded Israel and Judah, carried away the first wave of Israelite captives, and received tribute from King Ahaz.

Military Campaigns

Tiglath-pileser III (also called Pul in Scripture) campaigned against Syria and Israel. He conquered Damascus, killed King Rezin of Syria, and took captive the Israelites of Gilead, Galilee, and Naphtali, deporting them to Assyria. This began the scattering of the northern tribes. Menahem of Israel paid him a thousand talents of silver as tribute.

Alliance with Ahaz

When Rezin of Syria and Pekah of Israel attacked Judah, King Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser with silver and gold from the Temple and royal treasuries, saying, 'I am your servant and son. Come up and save me.' The Assyrian king obliged by attacking Damascus and killing Rezin, but this alliance ultimately proved costly for Judah.
