Sheresh was the second of two sons born to Machir (son of Manasseh) by his wife Maacah. He became the father of Ulam and Rakem, continuing the Machirite line that played an important role in the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh. His name, meaning 'root,' may have signified the family's hope that he would establish a strong lineage.
