Semei

/SEM-ee-eye/

Summary

The Greek form of Shimei, appearing in Luke's genealogy as an ancestor of Jesus Christ.

In Christ's Genealogy

Semei appears in Luke's genealogy as the son of Joseph (not the husband of Mary, but an earlier ancestor) and father of Mattathias. This places him in the post-exilic period of Jewish history, in the line leading from David through Nathan to Jesus. He may be the same person as Shemaiah, son of Shechaniah and father of Neariah in 1 Chronicles.

The name Semei also appears in the apocryphal books referring to other individuals—one among those who put away foreign wives, and another as an ancestor of Mordecai.
