Summary

Peninnah was one of the two wives of Elkanah, the father of Samuel, and the rival of Hannah.

Rivalry with Hannah

Peninnah bore children to Elkanah while Hannah remained barren. She provoked Hannah severely, tormenting her about her childlessness, especially during the yearly visits to Shiloh for worship. This bitter rivalry continued until God answered Hannah's prayers and gave her Samuel.
