Nathan Melech

נְתַן־מֶלֶךְ/NAY-than-MEL-ek/

The gift of the king

Summary

Nathan-melech was a eunuch or chamberlain in the court of King Josiah, whose chamber was near the place where horses dedicated to the sun were kept.

In Josiah's Reform

Nathan-melech is mentioned in connection with King Josiah's religious reforms. His chamber was located at the entrance of the house of the Lord, in the suburbs or precincts of the temple. Near this chamber were kept the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, which Josiah removed as part of his purging of idolatrous worship. The sun chariots were burned with fire.
