Summary

An ancestor of Joseph, husband of Mary, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus.

In Matthew's Genealogy

Matthew's genealogy records: 'Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ' (Matthew 1:15-16). Matthan was thus the great-grandfather of Jesus through Joseph.

Post-Exilic Generation

Matthan lived in the post-exilic period, between the return from Babylon and Christ's birth. His family maintained the Davidic line through centuries of foreign domination—Persian, Greek, and Roman—preserving the legal right to the throne that would be claimed by the Messiah.
