Kishi(kushaiah)

קִישִׁי/KISH-eye/

Snarer, or fowler

Summary

A Merarite Levite, the father of Ethan, one of the three chief musicians appointed by David to lead the temple worship.

Identity and Family

Kishi was a Levite of the family of Merari, the son of Abdi, and the father of Ethan. His son Ethan was one of the three chief singers appointed by David to lead the musical worship in the sanctuary, alongside Heman of the Kohathites and Asaph of the Gershonites. In the parallel account in Chronicles, Kishi appears under the variant name Kushaiah, both names apparently meaning "snarer" or "fowler." Through his son Ethan, Kishi's family maintained an important role in Israel's worship tradition.
