Josiphiah
יוֹסַפְיָה/jos-ih-FY-uh/
“Yah (Jehovah) adds or increases”
Summary
An Israelite whose descendant Shelomith returned to Jerusalem with Ezra from the Babylonian exile.
☩Family and Historical Context
Josiphiah is mentioned in Ezra 8:10 in connection with the return from Babylonian captivity under Ezra around 459 BC. The Hebrew text as it currently stands indicates that Shelomith the son of Josiphiah led a company of 160 males back to Jerusalem. However, textual scholars note that a word has apparently dropped out of the Hebrew text at the beginning of the verse. The Septuagint and 1 Esdras 8:36 supply the name 'Bani' (omitted due to its similarity to the preceding word for 'sons of'), making Bani the son of Shelomith and leader of the returning party, with Josiphiah as Shelomith's father.
