Jephunneh
“Nimble, or for whom a way is prepared”
Summary
The name of two men in the Old Testament: most notably the father of Caleb the faithful spy, who was a Kenizzite incorporated into the tribe of Judah; and also an Asherite, son of Jether.
☩Father of Caleb
Jephunneh was the father of Caleb, the renowned spy who, together with Joshua, brought back a faithful report of the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:6; 14:6, 30, 38). Though Caleb is listed as belonging to the tribe of Judah (Numbers 13:6), Jephunneh is identified as a Kenizzite (Numbers 32:12; Joshua 14:6), indicating that the Kenizzite clan was incorporated into the tribe of Judah. The Kenizzites were apparently an Edomite tribe, as Kenaz was a 'duke of Edom' (Genesis 36:11, 15). Jephunneh's name means 'nimble' or 'for whom a way is prepared.' He lived around 1698-1530 B.C.
