Summary

The chief of David's mighty men who single-handedly slew 300 (or 800) enemies at one time.

Chief of the Three

Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was the first named and greatest of David's mighty men, holding the position of 'chief of the three' or 'chief of the captains.' His most celebrated exploit was slaying 300 men at one time (800 according to another account), striking them down with his spear in successive throws. The discrepancy in numbers may be due to textual transmission or possibly represents two different occasions.

Commander of the First Division

Jashobeam son of Zabdiel, of the family of Perez, commanded the first of David's twelve monthly divisions, each consisting of 24,000 men. He was responsible for duty in the month of Nisan (the first month). He may be the same as the Korahite who joined David at Ziklag during the time of Saul's persecution.
