Ishiah

יִשִּׁיָּה/ish-SHY-uh/

Lent by Jehovah

Summary

A name borne by several men in the Old Testament, including a chieftain of Issachar and various Levites, meaning 'lent by Jehovah.'

Chief of Issachar

The most prominent Ishiah was the fifth son of Izrahiah, grandson of Issachar, and a valiant chieftain of his tribe. He served during the time of David as one of the heads of Issachar. Though his genealogy places him in the patriarchal period, the context of 1 Chronicles 7:2 suggests he was nearly contemporary with David.

Levites Named Ishiah

Several Levites bore this name. One was the second son of Uzziel, grandson of Levi, and father of Zechariah. Another was the first of the sons of Rehabiah, great-grandson of Moses, also called Jeshaiah in other passages. A Korhite warrior named Ishiah (called Jesiah) joined David at Ziklag during Saul's persecution. After the exile, one of the sons of Harim named Ishiah (Ishijah) divorced his Gentile wife in response to Ezra's reforms.
