Igeal was the son of Shemaiah, a descendant of King David through the post-exilic line. The name means 'he (God) redeems' or 'whom God will avenge.' He is listed fourth in descent from Zerubbabel, though according to some scholars he may have been the son of Shimei, brother to Zerubbabel. The Revised Version renders his name as 'Igal.'
