Hanameel

חֲנַמְאֵל

God has been gracious

Summary

Jeremiah's cousin who sold him a field in Anathoth during the Babylonian siege, demonstrating faith in God's promise of restoration.

The Transaction

During the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, God told Jeremiah his cousin Hanamel would offer to sell him a field in Anathoth (Jeremiah 32:6-7). When Hanamel came as predicted, Jeremiah purchased the field, weighed out the silver, signed the deed before witnesses, and stored the documents in a clay jar—all symbolic of God's promise: 'Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land' (Jeremiah 32:15). This act of faith during Jerusalem's darkest hour proclaimed hope for the future.
