Gadi

גָּדִי/GAY-dye/

Fortunate or a Gadite

Summary

The father of Menahem, who seized the throne of Israel by assassinating King Shallum.

Biblical Reference

Gadi is mentioned only as the father of Menahem, one of the later kings of the northern kingdom of Israel. Menahem, son of Gadi, killed Shallum who had himself usurped the throne after assassinating Zechariah, and then reigned in his place. The name Gadi suggests a connection to the tribe of Gad, meaning 'fortunate' or 'a Gadite.'
