Ebiasaph

אֶבְיָסָף/ee-BY-uh-saf/

Probably a contraction of Abiasaph, meaning 'my father has gathered'

Summary

A Levite of the Kohathite line, son of Elkanah and father of Assir, whose name is also contracted to Asaph in some passages and who is likely identical with Abiasaph of Exodus.

Genealogical Position

Ebiasaph appears in the genealogy of the Kohathite Levites as the son of Elkanah and father of Assir. In 1 Chronicles 6:37, he is called the son of Korah, which has led most interpreters to identify him with the Abiasaph mentioned in Exodus 6:24 as one of the sons of Korah. His name appears in contracted form as Asaph in 1 Chronicles 26:1. From 1 Chronicles 9:19, it appears that he had a son named Kore, whose descendants served as gatekeepers, maintaining the threshold of the tabernacle as their fathers had guarded the entrance to the camp of the Lord.
