“Son of my sorrow”

Summary

The name Rachel gave to her second son as she died in childbirth; Jacob renamed him Benjamin.

☩Birth and Naming

As Rachel was dying in labor on the road to Bethlehem, she named her newborn son Ben-oni, meaning 'son of my sorrow.' Jacob, however, called him Benjamin ('son of the right hand'), refusing to let the child bear a name of such grief.
