Barachiah (also spelled Berechiah) was the father of the prophet Zechariah, as stated at the beginning of the prophetic book. Jesus referenced Zechariah son of Barachiah as martyred 'between the sanctuary and the altar.'
Scholars debate whether Jesus' reference is to the prophet Zechariah or to Zechariah son of Jehoiada, who was stoned in the templecourt according to 2 Chronicles 24:20-22. Luke's parallel passage omits the patronymic.
