Baalis
בַּעֲלִיס/BAY-uh-lis/
“Possibly 'son of exultation' or a form of Baalim (gods)”
Summary
The king of the Ammonites who instigated the assassination of Gedaliah, the Babylonian-appointed governor of Judah.
☩The Conspiracy
After the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah as governor over the remnant left in Judah. Johanan and other military leaders warned Gedaliah that Baalis, king of Ammon, had sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to assassinate him. Gedaliah refused to believe the report, and the plot succeeded—Ishmael murdered Gedaliah and many others at Mizpah.
