A military attendant who carried weapons for a king, commander, or champion, serving as both assistant and bodyguard.

Role and Examples

An armor-bearer carried the large shield and other weapons for warriors of distinction. All commanders of high rank had such attendants. Notable examples include Jonathan's armor-bearer who accompanied him in attacking the Philistine garrison, Saul's armor-bearer who refused to kill his master, and David who briefly served as Saul's armor-bearer. Goliath had one who walked before him carrying his shield.
