/SWEET IN-sens/

Summary

Composition and Use

Sweet incense was a specially compounded mixture of aromatic spices: stacte, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense in equal parts, beaten small and seasoned with salt. This holy incense was burned on the golden altar before the veil, morning and evening, filling the sanctuary with fragrant smoke. It was sacred to the Lord and forbidden for personal use.

Symbolic Meaning

Incense symbolizes prayer ascending to God. The psalmist prays, 'Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense.' In Revelation, golden bowls full of incense represent the prayers of the saints. The sweet aroma pleased God, just as the prayers of His people are a fragrant offering before His throne.
