Necklace

Summary

Necklaces were common ornaments in the ancient Near East, worn as jewelry and sometimes as symbols of authority or honor.

As Ornament and Symbol

Necklaces and chains were worn as personal adornment throughout the biblical world. Pharaoh placed a gold chain about Joseph's neck as a mark of honor when elevating him to high office. The Ishmaelite camels wore chains, and kings wore them as part of their royal insignia. Isaiah lists necklaces among the finery of the daughters of Jerusalem.
