Helm

Summary

The rudder or steering mechanism of a ship, mentioned as an example of how small things control large vessels.

Usage

The Greek 'pedalion' (James 3:4) refers to the ship's rudder. James observes that large ships driven by strong winds are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wishes. He uses this to illustrate how the tongue, though small, can direct the whole body—for good or ill. Acts 27:40 mentions the rudders being loosed when Paul's ship was about to run aground.
