Summary

A natural petroleum product used as waterproofing and mortar in ancient construction, including Noah's ark and the tower of Babel.

Biblical Uses

Noah was commanded to cover the ark inside and out with pitch (bitumen) for waterproofing. The builders of Babel used bitumen as mortar. Moses' basket was coated with bitumen and pitch to make it waterproof.
