Porters(doorkeeper, gatekeeper)

/POR-terz/

Summary

Porters (doorkeepers or gatekeepers) were Levites responsible for guarding the gates of the temple and its treasuries.

Temple Doorkeepers

The porters were Levites who guarded the entrances to the temple, opening and closing the gates at appointed times. They were organized into courses like the priests. David organized 4,000 porters for temple service. They guarded the thresholds, kept watch over the chambers and treasuries, and ensured that no unclean person entered the sacred precincts.

Spiritual Significance

The Psalmist declared he would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. This humble position was esteemed because it meant serving in God's presence. The porter's faithfulness in a seemingly minor role illustrates the value God places on faithful service regardless of prominence.
