James warns against being 'hearers only' who deceive themselves (James 1:22-25). Such a person is 'like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.' Jesus similarly concluded the Sermon on the Mount by contrasting those who hear and do His words (wise builder) with those who hear but don't do (foolish builder) (Matthew 7:24-27).
