The rock hyrax (Syrian Hyrax), a small mammal classified as unclean under Mosaic law because it appears to chew the cud but does not divide the hoof.

Identification

The coney is not the rabbit but the rock hyrax (Hyrax Syriacus), a small mammal about the size of a cat. It has long hair, a short tail, and round ears. Though it appears to chew the cud due to the motion of its jaws, it is not a true ruminant.
