Tax(poll tax, tariff)

/TAKS/

Summary

Taxes in biblical times included tribute to foreign rulers, temple contributions, and various levies, with tax collectors being particularly despised in Jewish society.

Types of Taxes

Scripture mentions various forms of taxation: tribute paid to conquering nations, the half-shekel temple tax required of every Israelite male, customs duties on trade, and land taxes. Roman taxation under the publicani system was especially burdensome and open to abuse, as collectors bid for the right to collect taxes and kept whatever excess they could extract.

Tax Collectors

Tax collectors (publicans) were despised by Jews as collaborators with Rome and sinners due to their reputation for dishonesty. Yet Jesus called Matthew the tax collector to be His disciple and ate with tax collectors, drawing criticism from the Pharisees. Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, demonstrated true repentance by pledging to restore fourfold anything he had taken wrongfully.
