The eleventh month of the Jewish ecclesiastical year, corresponding roughly to January-February.

Identification

Sebat (or Shebat) was the fifth month of the Jewish civil year and eleventh of the ecclesiastical year, extending from the new moon of February to that of March, or according to some, corresponding to January. The name is substantially the same in Syriac and Arabic. Zechariah received his vision in the eleventh month, the month Sebat.

Seasonal Significance

The Jews began in this month to number the years of trees they planted, whose fruits were considered impure until the fourth year. Sebat falls during the winter season with its latter rains, leading toward spring.
