Summary

Scripture addresses political authority, civic duty, and the relationship between believers and governing powers.

Divine Institution

Governing authorities are established by God for the punishment of evildoers and praise of those who do good. Christians are to submit to governing authorities, pay taxes, and honor rulers. Daniel served pagan governments while maintaining his faith. Jesus distinguished between duties to Caesar and to God.

Limits of Obedience

When human commands conflict with divine commands, believers must obey God rather than men. The apostles continued preaching despite official prohibition. Hebrew midwives disobeyed Pharaoh's command to kill infants. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar's image.
