Homage
Summary
Acts of reverence, respect, or worship shown to those in authority, particularly to God and to kings.
☩Biblical Examples
Prostration (bowing to the ground) was common homage to kings and superiors (Genesis 43:26; 2 Samuel 9:6). The Hebrew 'hishtachavah' can mean either social obeisance or religious worship depending on context. The wise men 'fell down and worshiped' the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:11). Angels and elders give homage to God around His throne (Revelation 4:10; 5:14). The first commandment reserves ultimate homage for God alone.
