/gift of TUNGZ/

Summary

A supernatural endowment first given at Pentecost enabling believers to speak in languages they had not learned.

At Pentecost

The gift of tongues was first imparted to the disciples on the day of Pentecost, fulfilling John the Baptist's prophecy that Christ would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The disciples spoke in various languages that were understood by Jews from different nations gathered in Jerusalem.

In the Early Church

The gift continued in the apostolic church, as seen at Corinth where Paul addressed its use and regulation. Paul distinguished between tongues as a sign to unbelievers and prophecy for the edification of believers, urging that all things be done decently and in order.
