Genius

/JEEN-yus/

Summary

In Roman mythology, a protecting spirit assigned to each person from birth to guide and guard them through life.

Roman Concept

The belief in invisible protecting spirits was widespread, but nowhere was the doctrine of genii so developed as in Rome. Every person was believed to have a deity assigned from birth to direct and guard them. These were worshiped on general festive days and individually. The concept extended beyond persons to include important works and objects, each having its genius.
