Tibhath
“Slaughter; or extension”
Summary
A city belonging to Hadadezer, king of Zobah, from which David took large quantities of bronze used later in Solomon's temple construction.
☩David's Conquest
When David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah, he captured bronze from Tibhath and the sister city of Cun. This bronze was later used by Solomon in constructing the furnishings of the temple. The conquest demonstrates the extent of David's military campaigns into Aramean territory.
☩Identification
In the parallel account in 2 Samuel 8:8, the city is called Betah, probably due to an accidental transposition of the first two letters. Tibhath may be identified with the Tubihi mentioned in the Tell el-Amarna Letters, the Dibhu of the Karnak lists, and the Tubihi mentioned with Kadesh on the Orontes in Egyptian records from the reign of Rameses II. The exact site remains unknown, but it was located on the eastern slopes of the Anti-Lebanon range, within the territory of Zobah between the mountains and the Euphrates.
