Summary

An ancient Egyptian town at the First Cataract of the Nile, now known as Aswan, marking Egypt's southern boundary.

Location and Identification

Seveneh is the town at the First Cataract in Egypt, now known as Aswan (ancient Syene). In Ezekiel's prophecies against Egypt, the phrase 'from Migdol to Seveneh' (or 'from the tower of Syene' in the KJV) indicates the full extent of Egypt from its northeastern border to its southern frontier. The Revised Version reads 'the tower of Seveneh' with a marginal note 'or, from Migdol to Syene.'

Historical Significance

Fresh archaeological interest was given to this location by the Elephantine discoveries—papyri bearing on an ancient Jewish colony and temple of Yahweh that existed there in the 5th century BC. These documents reveal a community of Jewish mercenaries who had their own temple, providing important insights into Jewish life in Egypt during the Persian period.
