Kitron

קִטְרוֹן/KIT-ron/

Knotty, or possibly castle

Summary

A Canaanite city in the territory of Zebulun that the Israelites failed to conquer, allowing its inhabitants to remain among them.

Location and History

Kitron was a city within the tribal territory of Zebulun from which the Israelites were unable to expel the Canaanite inhabitants. Instead, the Canaanites remained in the city, though eventually they were subjected to forced labor. The city is possibly identical with Kattath mentioned elsewhere among the cities of Zebulun, despite some scholarly objections based on the enumeration of cities in the tribal lists. In the Talmud, Kitron is identified with Sepphoris (Hebrew Zippori), the modern Seffurieh, which was a major city in later Galilee. The name appears to mean "knotty" or "castle," though the precise etymology remains uncertain.
