Kinah

קִינָה/KYE-nah/

Elegy, or lamentation

Summary

A city in the extreme south of Judah near the border of Edom, possibly connected with the Kenite settlements in that region.

Location and Identity

Kinah was a city in the extreme southern portion of Judah's territory, near the border of Edom, mentioned in the list of cities between Jagur and Dimonah. The site was likely within the area later assigned to the tribe of Simeon, whose territory was carved out of Judah's southern region. The name means "elegy" or "dirge," though some scholars suggest it may derive from the Kenites (qeniy), the nomadic tribe related to Moses who later settled in this southern district. Despite being mentioned in the Onomasticon of Eusebius and Jerome, the actual location of Kinah has not been definitively identified by modern scholars.
