Kartan

קַרְתָּן/KAR-tan/

Double city (an old dual form)

Summary

A Levitical city in the territory of Naphtali assigned to the Gershonite Levites, also known as Kirjathaim.

Location and Identity

Kartan was a town in the tribal territory of Naphtali that was given to the Gershonite branch of the Levites as one of their designated cities with surrounding pasture lands. In the parallel passage in Chronicles, the same city appears under the expanded form of its name, Kirjathaim, of which Kartan is likely a contraction. The associated place names in the biblical text suggest a location somewhere near the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, though the exact site has not been positively identified. One proposal locates it at the ruined village el-Katanah, situated on Wady Furam about midway between Lake Tiberias and the Huleh basin.
