Kartah

קַרְתָּה/KAR-tah/

City

Summary

A Levitical city in the territory of Zebulun assigned to the Merarite branch of the Levites.

Location and Identity

Kartah was a town in the tribal territory of Zebulun that was designated, along with its surrounding pasture lands, as a dwelling place for the Levites of the family of Merari. It appears in the list of Levitical cities in Joshua between Jokneam and Dimnah. The town is not mentioned in the parallel passage in Chronicles, which has led some scholars to suggest textual variations or that the name may have been a variant spelling of Kattath mentioned elsewhere in connection with Zebulun. The site has not been definitively identified, though one proposal places it at el-Harte, a village with traces of antiquity on the banks of the Kishon River.
