Departure

Summary

A stone near Saul's residence where David and Jonathan met for their final parting.

The Stone Ezel

Ezel (more fully 'the stone Ezel') was a well-known landmark near Saul's residence where Jonathan arranged to meet David secretly. Here Jonathan was to shoot arrows as a signal to indicate whether David could safely return to court or must flee for his life. The name means 'departure' and may have been an ancient marker stone. After Jonathan's signal indicated danger, the two friends met and parted with deep emotion. David then fled southward to Nob.
