Eltolad(tolad)

אֶלְתּוֹלַד/el-TOH-lad/

Kindred of God, or God is its posterity

Summary

A city in the southern region of Judah that was assigned to the tribe of Simeon.

Location and History

Eltolad was a city in the Negev (southern wilderness region) of Judah, mentioned between Azem and Chesil in Joshua's territorial lists. Though initially listed among Judah's cities, it was subsequently assigned to Simeon, whose territory lay within Judah's borders. The city remained in Simeon's possession until at least the time of David. In 1 Chronicles 4:29, the name appears in shortened form as Tolad, without the 'El' prefix.
