A Kohathite Levite ancestor of Samuel the prophet, whose name was also given to a district in Ephraim.

Ancestor of Samuel

Zuph was an Ephrathite ancestor of Elkanah and thus of the prophet Samuel. His name is preserved in the 'land of Zuph' through which Saul traveled when searching for his father's donkeys and first encountered Samuel.

Land of Zuph

The land of Zuph was a district in the hill country of Ephraim, apparently named after Zuph's descendants who settled there. It was in this region that Ramah, Samuel's hometown and the location of his prophetic ministry, was situated.
