Summary

One of David's mighty warriors who slew the Philistine giant Saph in single combat.

Military Service

Sibbechai the Hushathite was one of David's elite warriors and served as captain of the eighth division of 24,000 men in David's army, responsible for the eighth month. He belonged to one of the principal families of Judah, the Zarhites (descendants of Zerah), and was called 'the Hushathite' probably from his birthplace.

Giant Slayer

Sibbechai's great exploit that earned him a place among David's mighty men was his single combat with Saph (also called Sippai), a Philistine giant descended from the Rephaim. This battle occurred at Gezer (called Gob in 2 Samuel) during the wars with the Philistines.
