Shamhuth

שַׁמְהוּת/SHAM-hooth/

Desolation

Summary

An Izrahite who served as the fifth of David's twelve monthly military commanders, probably the same person as Shammoth the Harorite.

Military Role

Shamhuth served as one of David's twelve divisional commanders, leading the course for the fifth month with twenty-four thousand men under his command. His designation 'the Izrahite' (or Zarhite) indicates descent from Zerah, son of Judah. He appears to be the same individual as Shammoth the Harorite listed among David's thirty mighty men, and possibly identical to Shammah the Harodite mentioned in the parallel list.
