Neri

נֵרִיָּה/NEER-eye/

Jehovah is my lamp

Summary

Neri was an ancestor of Jesus mentioned in Luke's genealogy as the father of Salathiel and son of Melchi.

Genealogical Position

Neri appears in Luke's genealogy of Jesus as the son of Melchi and father of Salathiel. His name is probably identical with Neriah of the Old Testament. The genealogical connection is significant because it shows the line of David through Nathan rather than through Solomon, as in Matthew's genealogy. When Jeconiah's line failed, Salathiel succeeded as heir of Solomon's throne through Neri's lineage, and is therefore reckoned in Matthew's genealogy as Jeconiah's son by virtue of inheriting his status and prerogatives.
