Libni

לִבְנִי/LIB-nye/

White

Summary

A Levite, eldest son of Gershon and grandson of Levi, ancestor of the Libnite family.

Identity and Family

Libni was the first-named of the two sons of Gershon, son of Levi (Exodus 6:17; Numbers 3:18; 1 Chronicles 6:17). His name in Hebrew means 'white.' He is elsewhere called Ladan (1 Chronicles 23:7; 26:21). His son was named Jahath (1 Chronicles 6:20, 43), and his descendants became known as the Libnites, a recognized family among the Levites (Numbers 3:21; 26:58). A second Libni appears in 1 Chronicles 6:29 as a son of Mahli and grandson of Merari, though some scholars believe this is a textual error referring to the same person or possibly listing a descendant.
