Jetheth

יְתֵת/JEE-theth/

A nail or tent pin, symbolizing stability

Summary

An Edomite chief or duke descended from Esau, listed among the tribal leaders of Edom.

Identity and Context

Jetheth appears in the genealogical lists of Esau as one of the petty Edomite sheiks in Mount Seir. His name is the third listed among these chiefs in Genesis 36:40 and is repeated in 1 Chronicles 1:51. The name probably derives from a root meaning 'a nail' or 'tent pin,' which figuratively symbolized stability or princely authority, as seen in similar usage in Ezra 9:8 and Isaiah 22:23. Some scholars have suggested his name may have been associated with locations in the Arabian region, including El-Wetideh in Nejd.
