Jaziz

יָזִיז/JAY-ziz/

Prominent or whom God moves

Summary

A Hagrite who served as the chief shepherd over King David's flocks.

Role and Background

Jaziz was a Hagrite (descendant of Hagar) who served as the overseer of King David's flocks. The flocks were probably pastured east of the Jordan in the nomadic territory where the Hagrites had traditionally roamed for generations. His appointment demonstrates that David employed officials based on their competence regardless of their ethnic background, and the Hagrites' expertise with livestock made them well-suited for such pastoral responsibilities.
