Jashen

יָשֵׁן/JAY-shen/

Sleeping

Summary

The father of several of David's mighty warriors, also called Hashem the Gizonite.

Identity and Family

Jashen (meaning 'sleeping') was a man whose sons were among David's famous bodyguard of mighty men. In the parallel passage he is called Hashem the Gizonite. Some textual corruption appears to exist between the two accounts, with scholars suggesting that Jashen and Hashem were the same person, and that the warriors Jonathan and Ahiam may have been his grandsons through different sons. The Gizonite designation may refer to an origin in the hill country of Judah.
