Jaaziah
יַעֲזִיָּהוּ/jay-uh-ZY-uh/
“Comforted by Jehovah or Jehovah strengthens”
Summary
A descendant of Merari the Levite mentioned in the organization of Temple singers during David's reign.
☩Identity
Jaaziah appears as a descendant of Merari the Levite in the lists of 1 Chronicles 24:26-27. The text is somewhat difficult to interpret, as Merari's only sons mentioned elsewhere are Mahli and Mushi. Jaaziah may represent a third son or a later descendant of Merari whose line founded an independent house in that family. The word 'Beno' which follows his name should probably be translated 'his son,' referring to Merari's son, rather than as a proper name. Neither Jaaziah nor his descendants appear in other biblical genealogies, adding to the textual difficulties surrounding this passage.
